MonaLisa Touch Vaginal Rejuvenation Q & A

What is vaginal atrophy?

Vaginal atrophy occurs when levels of estrogen drop below normal. The condition commonly begins during perimenopause and persists after menopause. Vaginal atrophy may also be caused by health conditions that impact estrogen production, as well as by pelvic radiation and chemotherapy to treat cancer.

Estrogen is essential for a healthy vagina, as it helps maintain the vaginal lining and keeps tissues elastic. It also supports normal blood flow and lubrication. When estrogen levels drop, the vaginal wall becomes thin, dry, less elastic, and fragile.

Symptoms of vaginal atrophy include:

  • Vaginal dryness
  • Vaginal burning
  • Genital itching
  • Painful intercourse
  • Bleeding after intercourse
  • Less lubrication during intercourse
  • Burning with urination

How does MonaLisa Touch rejuvenate the vagina?

The MonaLisa Touch uses an advanced fractional CO2 laser to gently heat tissues in the vagina, which stimulates the production of collagen. As the vagina produces fresh collagen, the tone and texture of the vaginal lining are restored. The overall effect restores balance, improves vaginal health, and diminishes vaginal atrophy.

What can you expect during treatment with the MonaLisa Touch?

Laser treatment is delivered using a small device that’s inserted into the vagina. The procedure doesn’t require anesthesia because it’s virtually painless and quick; the entire treatment only takes about five minutes. Your provider at Fairfax OB-GYN Associates explains the procedure, answers your questions, and makes you comfortable during laser treatment.

What happens after the procedure is finished?

When treatment is finished, you can get back to your normal routine, because you won’t need any downtime. Most women have few, if any, side effects following treatment with the MonaLisa Touch. However, you may need to avoid sex for several days.

Even though you may feel the difference after one treatment, optimal results are achieved with three treatments over an 18-week period. The treatment is long-lasting, and you can maintain the benefits with one yearly treatment thereafter.

Does the MonaLisa Touch treat other gynecologic conditions?

The doctors at Fairfax OB-GYN Associates use the MonaLisa Touch to treat lichen sclerosus. Lichen sclerosus is a condition that causes areas of the skin on the external genitals to turn white and become thinner than normal. Postmenopausal women have a higher risk, but it can develop in any woman. Lichen sclerosus causes symptoms such as severe itching, discomfort, and painful intercourse.
